A Moment in the Word . . .

"I will come to church when I get good enough."  Chances are that you have heard this before.  Maybe you have even said it yourself.  But there is good news, the Bible tells us in Ps 14:3, There is none who does good, No, not one.  That includes you and me.

Deacons

You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them.  It is not so among you, but whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave; just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.  (Matthew 20:25-28)

Sensing the servanthood of our Lord Jesus Christ – and believing that deacons are set apart to minister to the members of a congregation, serving as undersheperds ever alert to care for the well-being of the flock – we commit ourselves to serve in and through the Church He loved and gave Himself for.  Realizing further that the role of servant is an honorable role, we will be examples of a servant after which others may model their lives.  Therefore, your deacons will fulfill their role through the following Deacon Ministry Teams:

Crisis

Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and God of all comfort; who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.  (II Corinthians 1:3,4)  Comfort ye, comfort ye my people…  (Isaiah 40:1)  Member of this ministry team will offer comfort, strength and prayers to those who are grieving.  Visits to the homes and funeral homes will communicate to those who are bereaved that you, your church, and the Lord care and are concerned about their loss.

Hospital

God’s providential care is shared with those in the hospital.  Priority will be given to the more serious cases.  Prayer prior to surgery and follow-up visits/calls to the patients and their families are used to express the concerns of the church.  Ministry will be offered to the family as needs are identified or request for help is requested.  I was sick and ye visited me… (Matthew 25:36)

New Member

Members of this ministry team help new members find their ministries in your church.  They accomplish this through a “New Member Packet” and by assisting the church staff.  During a home visit the week after an individual/family unites with Central, members of this team will share the privileges and responsibilities of church membership.  By getting to know new members early they make new members comfortable in their new church home.

Nursing Home

This ministry team regularly visits the extended care facilities of members of Central who are no longer able to attend our services.  Each member of Central in a nursing home will be assigned a deacon.  The members of this team should identify and meet needs of the confined member or family or contact the appropriate church resource on their behalf.  Pertinent information should be relayed to the Pastor and church staff.

Widows

Give proper recognition to those widows who are really in need.  (I Timothy 5:3)  In Acts chapter 6 it seems clear that the deacons were to take care of the widows.  In those days when the number of disciples was increasing, the Grecian Jews among them complained against the Hebraic Jews because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food.  So the twelve gathered all the disciples together and said, “It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables.  Brothers, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the spirit and wisdom.  We will turn this responsibility over to them and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word.”  This proposal pleased the whole group.  (Acts 6:1-5a)  We have almost 100 widows over 60 years of age in our church.  Each has been assigned and active deacon who is to contact them regularly.  The quarterly deacon/widow luncheon has become an event to which both the deacons and widows look forward.
